Design: A Modern Arts & Crafts Revival
Slabtown Square redefines urban living through a design philosophy rooted in the Modern Arts and Crafts movement. The architecture and interiors blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. From the checkered butcher block tables in the lobby to the custom kitchens in each unit, every detail reflects a commitment to quality and character.
The building’s layout encourages interaction and exploration, with distinct amenity spaces on nearly every level. Residents enjoy a rooftop exhibition kitchen, a wine room, a game room, and a screening room, each designed to foster community and comfort. The lobby, a standout feature, doubles as a communal hub with café seating, work pods, and a micro-retail flower shop, seamlessly integrating public and private spaces.
Construction: Innovation Meets Precision
Constructing a full-block, mixed-use development in Portland’s dense urban core required meticulous coordination and innovative engineering. LMC led the effort with a focus on collaboration and craftsmanship. One of the project’s most complex challenges was extending the underground parking garage beneath NW Quimby Street. This was achieved using lightweight cellular concrete fill, optimizing space while maintaining structural integrity.
The project also integrated a cutting-edge, building-wide access control system, allowing residents to use their smartphones for seamless entry to units and amenities. This forward-thinking approach to technology enhances both convenience and security.
Community: A Neighborhood Anchor
Slabtown Square is more than a residential building; it’s a community anchor. At its heart is a 16,000-square-foot public plaza, designed as a vibrant gathering space for residents and neighbors alike. Raised planters, built-in seating, and pedestrian pathways create a welcoming environment that encourages connection and activity.
The development also includes a pedestrian accessway and the extension of NW Quimby Street, enhancing walkability and integrating the site into the broader Slabtown neighborhood. Ground-floor retail spaces with operable garage-style doors invite local businesses to engage with the community, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor experiences.
With a mix of unit types, from micro-studios to spacious two-bedroom apartments, Slabtown Square offers housing options for diverse residents, including 40 units reserved for households earning up to 80% of the area median income.
Sustainability: Built for the Future
Environmental responsibility was a guiding principle throughout the project. Slabtown Square earned a Two Green Globes certification from the Green Building Initiative, recognizing its commitment to sustainable materials, energy efficiency, and long-term operational performance.
Key sustainability features include:
- Use of lightweight cellular concrete to reduce material usage and improve thermal performance.
- Energy-efficient systems and appliances throughout the building.
- Thoughtful landscaping and lighting design to reduce environmental impact and enhance public space usability.
These efforts reduce the building’s carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier, more resilient community.
