Nueva Esperanza is a 150-unit affordable housing development located in Hillsboro, Oregon. The project includes twelve residential buildings and a standalone community center, organized into three distinct “neighborhoods” across the site. Designed to serve Latinx and Somali immigrant families, the development features a mix of apartment sizes and culturally responsive design elements, such as outdoor boot wash stations, separated kitchen and living areas, and inclusive playground equipment. The site also features landscaped pathways, garden beds, plazas, and a paseo, a tree-lined community walkway designed to foster connection and outdoor activity.
The project was developed through a joint venture between Bienestar and the Housing Development Center (HDC), marking the largest and most complex development in Bienestar’s history. Construction began in 2021 and was completed despite challenges related to inflation, rising interest rates, and pandemic-related supply chain disruptions. Funding was secured through a combination of public and private sources, including support from the City of Hillsboro and Meyer Memorial Trust. The design process included extensive community engagement to ensure the final product reflected the needs and values of its future residents.
